At one o’clock on June 2, 2022 the NOAA ( National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) came to the Minot AFB base theater. SKYWARN was there. SKYWARN taught base personnel to be watchful when mother nature gets angry. Meteorologist J.P Martin talked about what everyone should do during weather warnings and what they mean for everyday citizens.
Some interesting topics discussed included the Fujita Scale that measures damage from a tornado while the Enhanced Fujita Scale measures wind speed. The term ‘Fujita Unknown’ means that a tornado’s wind speed could not be measured or didn’t hit anything. The NWS ( National Weather Service) protects life and properties to help people survive. According to Martin, weather spotters are critical to help people get the correct weather watches and warnings. The NOAA in Bismarck, ND has the 9th largest land in the NWS.
Kids can be prepared for all types of weather by knowing all the cloud formations and realizing what weather those clouds can bring. If kids know what weather may be approaching they can be prepared and take cover. The NOAA said it best: “ When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors”.
