- Many families enjoy outdoor fire pits and camping. Always ensure your fire pit is on a non-combustible surface, away from structures, fences, and overhanging branches. Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a shovel nearby. Never leave a fire unattended, and always make sure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving it or going to bed.
- Clean grill grease traps regularly to prevent flare-ups. Always use your grill outdoors, away from your home or any combustible materials, and never leave a lit grill unattended. Keep children and pets away from the grilling area.
- May can be a month for wildfire risk. Continue to maintain defensible space around your home by clearing dry vegetation and debris. Be mindful of activities that can spark a fire, such as discarding cigarettes improperly, using off-road vehicles in dry areas, or parking hot vehicles on dry grass.
- As you start using outdoor electrical equipment for yard work or recreational activities, inspect cords for damage and ensure they are rated for outdoor use. Avoid overloading electrical outlets. Indoors, ensure that air conditioning units are properly maintained and that all electrical appliances are in good working order to prevent overheating and potential electrical fires.
- Family’s home fire escape plan. Ensure everyone knows two ways out of every room, has a designated outdoor meeting place, and understands the sound of your smoke alarms. Practice the drill at least twice a year, and make sure everyone, including children, knows how to call 911 or (701) 727-1911 for MAFB Fire & Emergency Services.
