The Northern Sentry’s 2023 Best Food Place on MAFB winner, Son Of A Brunch, made its exit out of the Base Exchange food court, just this month. Son Of A Brunch was a locally-owned food truck-turned-BX-restaurant of hearty breakfast foods. Owner Lee Drummelsmith came to this location on MAFB in November 2021 and has been providing Airmen and their families early morning delicious eggs, bacon, sausage, burritos, sandwiches and much more since that time.
Son Of A Brunch had previously ceased operating out of the Minot AFB Exchange location and was utilizing its food truck at multiple locations around base before finally calling it quits for good last week. On September 19, Son Of A Brunch rolled out of MAFB for the last time after completing a marathon of attempting to stay open for over 24 hours straight.
The departure of Son Of A Brunch came before the end of the business’s initial three year contract deal. Drummelsmith felt it was time to move on from the base based on a difference of management direction from AAFES. AAFES General Manager at Minot AFB, Kyle Omler, was contacted but declined to comment on the premature departure of Son Of A Brunch.
Lee Drummelsmith spoke with the Northern Sentry saying, “My favorite part of being on base was getting to know a lot of amazing people and their lives from all over the world. I’ve had some of the best conversations with a lot of my regulars, and getting to really know my customers made it very rewarding. Having the privilege to make everyones’ days just a little bit better, whether it was just starting or just finishing, really was the greatest feeling.”
As a last statement to the base, Drummelsmith noted, “Thank you doesn’t even begin to cover how grateful I am of everyone that came and ate at my restaurant…You all treated me like family, even without me being prior military, and for that I can never thank you enough. Until next time.”
In a Son Of A Brunch Facebook post on Sept 8, 2024, Drummelsmith wrote, “Thank you all so damn much for all the support you have provided me and my family. The Son Of A Brunch brand is alive and well. We have solidified a very unique and permanent spot back in Minot, and will be moving there shortly. Details on this new spot will be coming soon!”
