With backpacks tucked away, classrooms emptied, and the final school bells ringing across Minot last week, families at Minot Air Force Base and throughout the Minot Public School District officially welcomed the start of summer during a warm and lively Memorial Day weekend.
After a long North Dakota winter and a chilly spring, residents were eager to soak up the sunshine as temperatures climbed into the upper 70s and low 80s. The sudden burst of summer weather transformed neighborhoods across the area, bringing families outdoors and filling parks, campgrounds, lakes, and local businesses with activity.

Children celebrated the end of the 2025-2026 school year by trading homework and early mornings for bicycles, fishing poles, backyard games, and road trips. Parents and students alike embraced the change of pace, with many saying the warm weather could not have arrived at a better time.
Throughout Minot, garden centers and local stores were packed with shoppers purchasing flowers, herbs, vegetable plants, patio furniture, and grilling supplies. Many residents spent the weekend planting gardens, mowing lawns, and preparing their yards for months of summer gatherings and cookouts.
Across base neighborhoods, the sounds of lawn mowers, children playing, and families setting up patio lights and fire pits signaled the unofficial beginning of summer. Some residents focused on deep cleaning homes and garages while others opened campers and prepared boats for the busy season ahead.

For many families, the long weekend meant heading outdoors to enjoy North Dakota’s lakes and campgrounds. One of the most popular destinations for local travelers was Lake Metigoshe, known for its scenic views, clear water, and family-friendly atmosphere. Located roughly an hour and 20 minutes from Minot Air Force Base, the lake attracted families looking for a relaxing escape filled with swimming, boating, hiking, and evenings around the campfire.
The Thompson family was among the many local families who packed up for a weekend getaway. Loading up their RV with camping gear traveled to Lake Sakakawea State Park to spend the holiday weekend enjoying the outdoors.

Others chose to use the long weekend to reconnect with loved ones, traveling to neighboring states to visit family and friends. Highways leaving Minot saw steady traffic as residents took advantage of the extra day off and improved road conditions after months of winter weather.
The weekend also marked an emotional and exciting milestone for graduating seniors and their families. Graduation ceremonies at Minot North High School and Minot High School brought students, teachers, and families together to celebrate years of hard work and achievement.

Graduates crossed the stage in front of cheering crowds as proud parents snapped photos and families gathered afterward for celebrations ranging from backyard barbecues to graduation parties. For many students, the ceremonies represented the closing of one chapter and the beginning of another as they prepared for college, military service, careers, and new adventures.
Despite the excitement and celebration, many residents also took time to reflect on the true meaning of Memorial Day. At Minot Air Force Base, the holiday carried special meaning for many military families who paused to remember fallen service members while also appreciating the opportunity to spend quality time together during the long weekend.
As the sun set on Memorial Day weekend, one thing was clear across Minot and the surrounding communities, summer has finally arrived. From camping trips and graduation celebrations to gardening and backyard gatherings, residents made the most of the warm weather and the fresh start that comes with the end of another school year.
