The Sentinel Spark: Springing into Action

Spring at Minot North High School has officially turned into a highlight reel. From clutch softball wins to state qualifying speed on the track and strong finishes on the golf course, the Sentinels are heating up at exactly the right time of year. With an addition of a marching band performance in Bismarck, and it is safe to say Minot North students have been everywhere lately except slowing down.

First up, the boys golf team continues to quietly put together one of the most consistent spring seasons in the WDA. At the St. Mary’s Invite on May 6, junior Kyler Weishaar shot a 77 to earn an impressive third place individual finish while the Sentinels placed fourth as a team. That performance came just two days before another strong showing on May 8, where Minot North finished fifth overall and Weishaar placed eighth individually. The Sentinels have steadily climbed leaderboards all spring, proving that they can compete with anyone when their lineup gets rolling.

Meanwhile, the girls track team delivered one of the biggest moments of the season during the final Minot meet on May 8. Senior Codey Irwin punched her ticket to state in the 100 meter dash with a blazing 12.92. One quick burst down the track and suddenly the Sentinels had another state qualifier to celebrate. The crowd energy rose instantly as Irwin crossed the finish line, knowing she had secured her spot among North Dakota’s best.

Then came softball, where things got chaotic in the best possible way. At the Midseason Madness tournament in Fargo on May 8 and 9, Minot North battled through a packed slate of close games and dramatic finishes. The Sentinels narrowly fell to Fargo Davies 6 to 5 in a game that could have gone either direction. Instead of letting the loss shake them, North bounced back with one of the wildest games of the weekend, defeating Velva 12 to 11 in an offensive shootout that kept fans on edge until the final out, and they were not finished yet.

The next day, the Sentinels dug deep again and pulled out a gritty 4 to 3 win over Kindred. Three games, two nail biting victories, and countless clutch moments later, Minot North left Fargo showing exactly why they are becoming one of the tougher teams to face this season. Earlier in the week, the Sentinels also made program history with their first ever softball win over Minot High, setting a new school record for conference wins in the process.

Of course, spring at Minot North is not only about athletics. On May 8, the Minot North Marching Band represented the school at Bismarck Band Day, bringing Sentinel pride onto the streets alongside bands from across the state. While athletes were chasing wins and medals, the band was making noise in a completely different way at the state capital, proving once again that school spirit is not limited to the scoreboard.

With postseason competition getting closer by the day, the Sentinels are building momentum across nearly every activity. Golf is finding consistency, track is sending athletes to state, softball is stacking up statement wins, and the marching band is representing Minot North across North Dakota. Spring sports season is entering crunch time, and Minot North looks more than ready for it.
