2026 National Children’s Dental Health Month Outreach

Smiles were wide at the Minot AFB Child Development Center last week, and not just on the face of Mr. Gator, the popular alligator teaching tool. Ten members of the 5th Medical Group’s Dental Clinic visited the center, along with North Plains and Dakota Elementary Schools, to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month. The team taught approximately 260 children about the importance of oral hygiene using fun, hands-on activities.
The children loved brushing cartoon “germs” off Mr. Gator’s teeth, which were made from the bottom halves of water bottles, and learning how to properly floss using crumpled green tissue paper as “food.” These clever activities helped the kids practice their dexterity while learning the crucial “C-shaped” flossing technique. After one little girl mastered the skill, she proudly declared, “I’m going to brush my teeth all the time!” It’s that kind of enthusiasm that shows the dental team their fun approach is making all the difference.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists, creating positive dental experiences at a young age is crucial for a lifetime of good oral health. The 5th Medical Group’s visit is a perfect example of how to make learning about dental hygiene fun and impactful. As National Children’s Dental Health month comes to a close, let’s continue to make sure our youngest community members have a reason to share their healthy smiles.
