Minot’s Warm Spell Interrupted by Snow

A little March snow brought everyone outside kids, families, and even the dogs.

After days of sunshine and temperatures climbing into the low 60s, many residents on Minot AFB were starting to believe spring had arrived early. Snow had melted away, patches of brown grass reappeared, and the simple sight of bare ground felt like a small victory after a long winter.

Then, in true North Dakota fashion, winter made a brief comeback. The March 12th snowfall arrived just as many kids on Minot Air Force Base were enjoying their spring break, catching some families off guard after the unusually warm stretch. The fresh snow also brought some road concerns, reminding drivers that March weather can still be unpredictable.

For many families, the sudden return of snow wasn’t all bad news. Across Minot AFB neighborhoods, kids bundled up and headed outside, taking advantage of the still manageable cold to build snowmen and play in the fresh snow. Base housing filled with the sound of shovels and snow blowers as neighbors cleared driveways and sidewalks

Some families turned shoveling into a family affair. Parents could be seen outside with their kids, turning driveway duty into a team project. In other yards, you could see spouses working quickly with a shovel, making sure their partner would have a clear spot to park when they got home. Some parents helped their kids roll snowballs into the shape of a snowman, offering guidance along the way while repeatedly reminding them not to eat the snow.

From Marian Weaver using a snowplow for the first time, to SMSgt Bries clearing their driveway, the Kennedy family turning shoveling into a team effort, and Lt. Greiner out shoveling with his little one, this snowfall had everyone pitching in.

While Minot often gets a reputation for its cold temperatures, moments like these are a reminder that winter here isn’t just about the cold, It’s also about the memories made in the middle of it. March snowfalls may not always be ideal, especially when spring feels so close but for many families across the area, they still provide the kind of small, everyday moments that turn into lasting memories.
