Fire-Smart Starts Here: SPARKY’s January Safety Tips

  • Ensure that space heaters are at least three feet away from anything that can burn and are turned off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
  • If you have a real Christmas tree, check it daily for dryness, as dry trees are highly flammable. When taking down lights, inspect them for any damage, such as frayed wires or cracked sockets, and discard any that are damaged.
  • With increased use of heating systems, the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning rises. Install CO alarms and smoke detectors on every level of your home and Test CO detectors & Smoke Alarms monthly.
  • Never leave cooking unattended and be especially cautious when frying or grilling. It’s also wise to create a “kid-free zone” of at least three feet around the stove.
  • Take the time to create and practice a home fire escape plan with your family & practice at least twice a year.
  • Everyone should know at least two ways out of every room. Also, ensure that all members of the household know to crawl low under smoke if they must exit through smoky conditions.
