As a longtime resident of Minot, I have visited the majority of businesses in our community at one time or another and I can say that I once visited the building of one particular business several years ago, but had never really known what services they provided. You see, I didn’t go into that building to shop, but instead went to see the remains of an underground tunnel that was found during a renovation project.
Minot has a bit of a sordid history especially during the prohibition era when it was nicknamed “Little Chicago” because it was a major hub for bootlegging. Historians say Al Capone once ran a sophisticated liquor operation right here in Minot, using tunnels beneath the city to move his goods. Those same passageways were also used to carry steam heat between buildings proving that Minot’s underground had more than one secret purpose. One of those such tunnels was found in a 1910 building, which now houses Niess Impressions.
So what is the tie to this era of history and Niess Impressions besides the tunnel remains? It’s the knowledge and desire that owner, Leonard Niess, has in keeping Minot’s history alive. His wealth of information, in addition to the variety of Minot gift shop items that he provides to the community made my visit with him incredibly informative. One of his passions lies in helping others publish their own family history. He also gives local authors the opportunity to publish their own literary works including one by a local author detailing Minot’s early days.

When you walk into the building, it may seem somewhat unassuming, but as you browse around, you can see the plethora of gifts that will catch your eye. From mugs with images of all the freshwater fish that can be caught in ND and Dakrat shirts, mugs, and images to B-52 keepsake gifts to an entire section of gag gifts, you just never know what you will come across.
In addition to the premade gifts, Niess can help you design specialized gifts including custom home decor, religious gifts, labels, book printing, shirts, and more. One of the coolest ideas that really caught my eye were the laser engraved cutting boards or rolling pins that allow you to get a keepsake family recipe printed right on a keepsake piece.
If you have ever wanted to become a member of an official Jackalope society, Niess can get you all signed up. He is even writing a book on the truth of the Jackalope. Niess Impressions is home to TJ and AJ Jackalope so remember to say hi to them when you stop in.
Niess Impressions has been providing a much needed service to Minot since 1998 when Leonard opened the business first near Dakota Square Mall and then with a move to its current location in around 2000. The printing business has changed a great deal over the years, but one thing has remained the same. Niess Impressions is dedicated to providing top quality services to the community.
If you would like some Clean Clear Garden Fresh North Dakota Air in a Can to send back home to a family member or are looking for a personalized or ready to purchase gift, Niess Impressions is the place to visit. Located at 101 E. Central Ave, you can’t miss it with its mint green exterior and uniquely shaped building. You can also check out their website at www.niessimpressions.com.
When I left this business, I couldn’t help but smile. My visit with Leonard Niess left me inspired and full of new ideas. With his creative flair and down-to-earth charm, Leonard has a way of turning shopping for local, personalized gifts into a truly welcoming experience.
