Minot North Performs First Spring Band Concert

The new Minot North Auditorium is a beautiful venue for the performing arts at Minot North.

On the evening of April 29th, at 7 pm, the MNHS Auditorium echoed with the powerful sounds of the first annual Spring Band Concert, masterfully directed by Jeremy Meinert. With a diverse and engaging program, the concert showcased the talent, discipline, and musical growth of students across all grade levels.

The 9th Grade Band opened the night with an astounding lineup, starting with New Forest March by Michael Sweeney, setting a lively and energetic tone. They continued with Voices of the Sky by Samuel Hazo, a more introspective and atmospheric piece that demonstrated the group’s range. Clifton Williams’ Variation Overture followed, challenging the young musicians with its complex form and dynamic contrasts. The set concluded with a crowd favorite, The Great Locomotive Chase by Robert W. Smith, which vividly captured the drama and excitement of its historical inspiration.

The concert continued with the combined 10th through 12th Grade Band performing a sophisticated and stirring set. James Swearingen’s Novena led the way with its rich harmonies and dramatic arc, followed by Gustav Holst’s timeless Second Suite in F, a staple in the concert band repertoire that allowed the ensemble to explore folk themes with elegance and strength. The band closed their individual set with Flight of the Piasa by Robert Sheldon, a piece steeped in Native American legend and filled with rhythmic intensity and soaring lines.
In a memorable finale, students from grades 9 through 12 united to perform Entrance of the Gladiators by Julius Fučík. Also known as the ‘Clown Song’. The full ensemble brought the iconic march to life with bold brass, crisp percussion, and spirited precision — a fitting and triumphant close to a fantastic evening of music.

Following the performance, Mr. Meinert took a moment to recognize the dedication and achievements of individual students. Awards were presented for Most Hard-Working Musician and the Leadership Award, the invaluable contributions of the band’s drum majors were honored, and our new upcoming drum majors were introduced. The highlight of the awards segment was the recognition of Tiana Pay as the Most Honorable Band Member, a tribute to her outstanding character and commitment to the program.

Looking ahead, the MNHS band has a busy and exciting schedule. The North Side Spring Jazz Concert will take place on May 6th at the MNHS Auditorium. On May 9th, students will participate in the much-anticipated Bismarck Band Night, and the season will culminate with their final performance at Graduation on May 25th.
The Spring Concert was more than just a showcase of talent — it was a celebration of dedication, community, and the power of music and togetherness. Under Mr. Meinert’s love and care for his students, the MNHS band proved that their passion and hard work are worthy of a standing ovation.
