A Sweet Start at Minot: Spouses Giving Back

For many new Airmen, arriving at their first duty station can feel both exciting and overwhelming. To help ease that transition, Minot Air Force Base offers the First Term Enlisted Course (FTEC) which is a 40-hour course designed to reinforce key lessons from Basic Military and Technical Training and assist Airmen in adjusting to their new roles in the operational Air Force.

Beyond the classroom instruction and leadership development, a thoughtful and surprising gesture awaits the new Airmen at every session thanks to a group of caring spouses who provide homemade and store-bought baked goods to welcome the newest members of Team Minot.

“For years, spouses from both wings on base have been providing treats for the FTEC,” said Erin Chapman, who currently coordinates the effort. “We’re not part of any specific organization—just people who want to give back to the Airmen.”

Every other Thursday morning, volunteers deliver cookies, brownies, Rice Krispies treats, muffins, and mini cupcakes to the Professional Development Center, where FTEC sessions are held. Each class typically includes around 40 Airmen, many of whom are away from home for the first time and adjusting to a completely new environment.
Technical Sergeant Adam Aljabi, the FTEC instructor at Minot AFB, works closely with Erin to coordinate delivery times and ensure everything is ready for the class. And when volunteer slots go unfilled, Erin is quick to roll up her sleeves and bake the needed treats herself.

“We are so lucky to have Mrs. Erin Chapman continue to organize the volunteers for the FTEC treats,” said Monica Schlabach, a fellow spouse and supporter. “She goes above and beyond, even filling in to bake when there are gaps. She truly has a heart for all Airmen.”

That heart is clearly felt by the Airmen themselves. As an FTEC student, Airman Avillar-Torres enjoyed a homemade muffin, he reflected, “The last time I had a home-baked good was Thanksgiving, nearly five months ago.” For many, a simple baked treat is more than a snack—it’s a comforting reminder of home and a sign that someone is thinking of them.

This thoughtful tradition doesn’t go unnoticed. It’s a small but meaningful way to welcome Airmen to Minot and let them know they are part of a community that cares.

Those interested in donating baked goods for future FTEC sessions are encouraged to get involved. Contributions homemade or store-bought can be coordinated through the volunteer SignUpGenius.
At Minot, it’s clear that a little sweetness can go a long way. And thanks to the dedicated efforts of spouses like Erin Chapman, Airmen may be far from home—but they’re never far from the warmth of support.
