Fire-Smart Starts Here: SPARKY’s September Safety Tips

  • As students settle back into routines, it’s crucial to reinforce fire safety. In dorms, remind students about the dangers of overloaded electrical outlets, using unapproved appliances (like hot plates or candles), and covering smoke detectors. At home, ensure children know two escape routes from their bedrooms and a family meeting place. A perfect time to practice your escape plan & route. Test and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • September is the ideal month to have your furnace, chimney, and other heating equipment inspected and serviced by a qualified professional. This ensures they are operating safely and efficiently, reducing the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning when cold weather truly sets in.
  • With increased use of indoor lighting and electronics as days shorten, it’s wise to consider a general inspection of your home’s electrical system. Look for frayed cords, loose outlets, and flickering lights, which can all be signs of potential hazards. Avoid overloading circuits and ensure all extension cords are used safely and are not run under rugs or heavy furniture or daisy chained.
