It’s been a week of highs, lows, and everything in between for Minot United and Minot North athletics, with every team showing heart, hustle, and determination. The Minot United Boys Hockey varsity team hit a bump in WDA play, suffering their first loss of the season in a hard-fought 3-2 battle against Legacy three days ago. The game was tight from start to finish, and despite the loss, the boys showed flashes of the skill and grit that have carried them through the season.
The bounce-back came quickly. Junior varsity didn’t skip a beat, storming to a 5-1 victory just days later. Mielke was solid in net, keeping the team confident and in control throughout the game. Varsity followed suit, grinding out a 4-1 win with goals from C. Richeson, Grosz, Bradley, and Christopher. L. Richeson was outstanding in net, making key saves that kept the opponent from mounting a comeback. The team is already back at work, eyes forward, and focused on sharpening their play for the next challenge.

Meanwhile, the Minot North Girls Basketball team has been locked in on every possession, even when results didn’t go their way. On January 13th, they fell 64-74 against St. Mary’s, and three days later, a close 66-68 loss to the Bismarck Demons showed just how competitive this squad can be. Brynn Francis stood out, earning the Isaac Award with a gritty, all-around performance. She locked in on defense, battled every rebound in the paint, and knocked down clutch free throws when the game was on the line. Her effort epitomizes what this team is about: heart, focus, and toughness no matter the scoreboard.
The boys basketball team has had a rollercoaster stretch as well. January 16th, they suffered a heavy loss to the Bismarck Demons, 28-89, but earlier proved their skill by squeaking out a 75-74 win over St. Mary’s. The win showed resilience and clutch performance, highlighting the team’s ability to stay composed under pressure and fight for every point.
Off the hardwood and ice, the Minot United Dance Team is gearing up for its Annual Home Show on January 24th at 4 p.m. at Minot North High School. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for students, and free for kids under 5. The event will feature a showcase of talent from MUDT, Magikix, Mini Damp Dancers, Studio X, MCDC, MDA, and the Minot United Drum Line. Fans can expect high-energy performances and a taste of what the team will bring to state competition on January 30th and 31st. The excitement is building, and the show promises to be a highlight of the season.
Minot North Cheer also had a weekend to remember at the Best of the Midwest competition, despite dealing with multiple injured team members. Their resilience and skill shone through in team events, where Time Out placed 2nd, Game Day also 2nd, and CDR finished 3rd. The Triple Threat squads earned top finishes, including a 1st-place for Amelia, Ashley, and Makynzie, 3rd for Rie, Alina, and Peyton, and 5th for Tori, Kiarra, and Peyton. Solos were equally impressive: Makynzie earned 1st for her tumble solo, Vreelyn captured 1st for Champion Solo Star and 4th in her tumble solo. Stunt competitions were competitive as well, with Silver Strike placing 2nd, Navy Storm 6th, and Northern Lights 9th. In the jump solo, Vreelyn took 1st, Kiarra 4th, Makynzie 9th, and Peyton 10th.
The crowning achievements came with Minot North earning the Best Stunts award and Vreelyn Nygard taking home the honor of Triple Crown Champion. This recognition highlights the team’s dedication, skill, and relentless work ethic. Even with injuries and the physical demands of the season, Minot North Cheer proved they could compete at the highest level.
