By From November 6-7, the North Dakota State Student Congress was held in Bismarck’s capitol—the only state to host its student congress competition in its actual capitol building. Students from across North Dakota participated in debates modeled after the House of Representatives and Senate. Following the presentation of the colors and Pledge of Allegiance in the chambers, debaters were sectioned off according to their Houses.
After opening speeches for five resolutions in each House were given, students spent two days debating whether each bill would pass or fail. After debates were concluded, First Lady Kjersti Armstrong gave a speech, highlighting the significance of our legislatures, where debates, words, and bills can change the lives of every American. More importantly, she emphasized the art of learning how to disagree respectfully, to formulate a response, and defend decisions logically.

Her words resonated with all students, especially Minot’s very own student congress team, Minot United. Coached by Ms. Crystal Michels, Minot United had a strong showing at the NDHSAA-sanctioned event, with Ilana Tyan placing fourth and Youness Elbouab placing eighth in House 5. In House 4, Bryleigh McBride earned eighth place. Fatimazahra Elbouab became the state champion in House 3, while in House 1, Leah Dokken tied with two others for first place, also earning the title of state champion.
Although Horace High School won the NDHSAA 2025 State Championship for student congress as a school, Minot United’s results, placing 6th overall, clearly reflect the team’s dedication, effort, and skill. Throughout the season, Minot has been shining, with various members placing at the October Congress and East Congress in Mandan. Despite being a relatively new and small team, Minot United’s impressive results this year highlight that their best years are still ahead.
