Drug Prevention Designs Foster Student Awareness

Wyatt’s Winning Poster

Alyssa Kelly, School Liaison Program Manager

Minot AFB’s Drug Prevention Poster Contest was recently open to all students attending school on base. This contest was led by Community Police Liaison, A1C Damian Lalama, and fosters drug awareness and prevention among our young military-connected students. Regarding this contest, A1C Lalama states, “As Community Police Liaison for the 5th Security Forces Squadron, I continued the contest SrA Erin Nelson started because I believe involving local youth in creative drug prevention activities strengthens our community. It gives children a positive, fun way to express and share the Drug Free message across the base, and when kids see artwork by their peers they connect with the message more and gain a deeper understanding of it.” Our winners were Maeve Holmgren and Wyatt Brown from Dakota Elementary School. Their outstanding artwork was selected for its powerful message and artistic excellence.

Wyatt Brown
Regarding Wyatt’s design, he states, “The sun is sad because people take drugs and drink alcohol. Don’t take candy from strangers, it could have drugs in it. If you see someone taking drugs, report it to a trusted adult or your guardian. If one of your friends tells you to take drugs, say no and if one of your friends has them, tell someone. If you take a medication that is prescribed to you, do not worry [because] it will help with medical issues and/or mental issues. If you find a needle do not touch it, it could make you very sick. visit https://dare.org/ to learn more about drugs.”

Regarding Maeve’s poster, she states, “I did a drug free poster to convince people not to do drugs because they might cause serious injuries. I used bees to make it catchier so people can remember not to do drugs.”

We are proud to show off the voices of our youth by showcasing their work throughout the base. Their posters are currently on display at the following key locations:
• The Base Gym
• Commissary
• 5th Security Forces Squadron (5th SFS)
• Exchange
• Food Court
• School Liaison Office
• All on-base schools

A1C Lalama adds, “Thank you to all the students who submitted poster designs. The creativity and effort displayed were truly impressive, making the selection process a challenging one.” Thank you, A1C Lalama for your creative effort to increase student awareness of this important topic!
