The award recognizes a credit union volunteer who has selflessly contributed time, effort, and expertise to the growth and success of their credit union, while demonstrating unwavering commitment to the broader credit union movement, advocacy efforts, community service, and the cooperative principles that define the industry.

Mike’s dedication to the credit union difference has spanned more than two decades. He has served on the North Star Board of Directors since 2003, including the past 11 years as Chairman, helping guide the organization through transformative growth while never losing sight of the credit union’s member-first philosophy. His volunteerism is rooted in a desire to uplift others—whether through thoughtful governance, charitable initiatives, or community partnerships—and his influence has created a lasting legacy within North Star Community Credit Union and the communities it serves.

A tireless advocate for credit unions, Mike has represented North Star Community Credit Union at state and national levels, including attending five Governmental Affairs Conferences in Washington, D.C.. He has also played a key role in North Star’s charitable efforts, most notably leading the credit union’s $100,000 pledge in 2024 to support the MicroPreemie Unit at Sanford Children’s Hospital through Credit Unions for Kids. His leadership has also enhanced fundraising partnerships with organizations like the Rugby Car Club, Farm Rescue and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

The Dakota Credit Union Volunteer of the Year Award recognizes one individual each year from North and South Dakota who goes above and beyond in demonstrating service, leadership, and dedication to cooperative principles. In receiving this award, Mike Black joins an elite group of credit union champions whose passion for people and commitment to the cooperative spirit continue to shape the future of the credit union movement. This recognition stands a testament to a lifetime of selfless contribution, a deep-rooted commitment to people helping people, and a legacy of leadership that continues to inspire.
