This award recognizes educators who inspire civic responsibility, promote patriotism, and teach flag etiquette – qualities that Peterson embodies both in her teaching and personal life. As the daughter of a Vietnam War veteran and the mother of an Air Force Airman currently stationed at Minot Air Force Base, Peterson’s connection to the military is deep-rooted.
Born and raised in Minot, Peterson has been a dedicated teacher at North Plains Elementary for the past three years. Her passion for teaching military children and instilling a sense of duty, respect, and community is evident in the classroom. “If for whatever reason I forget to lead my students in the Pledge of Allegiance, which doesn’t happen often, my students will remind me because it’s part of our daily routine,” Peterson said, laughing. “It’s something we do every day, and it’s important to me that they learn the value of that tradition.”
Throughout her time at Minot AFB, Peterson has gone above and beyond in supporting the military community. She has actively promoted fundraisers to support local veterans and has been a participant in the Wreaths Across America initiative for the past five years, alongside her family and loved ones.
“My connection to the military goes as far back as my grandfathers,” Peterson shared. “That’s why the military is so important to me – it’s part of who I am.”
Winning the VFW Teacher of the Year Award came as a surprise at every level, but Peterson humbly expressed her gratitude for the recognition. “I was shocked when I won at the local and district levels, and when I won at the state level, I was shocked again. While it’s been surprising at every level, it has also been incredibly humbling.”
As a teacher to military children, Peterson understands the unique challenges they face. “Watching my students go through the emotions of transitioning to new bases has been difficult. But one of my favorite things about teaching military kids is the love they share and the way they connect with others and myself. They have a special ability to form bonds quickly, and it’s inspiring to witness.”
Angela Peterson’s dedication to her students, her unwavering support for the military, and her commitment to promoting patriotism and civic responsibility make her a true role model. VFW Post 743 of Minot has honored her not just as a teacher but as a vital part of the community.
