Magic City’s Civil Air Patrol cadets earned top marks competing in Saturday’s state-level competition in Fargo. This was the first time Minot sent a team to compete cornering first place in physical fitness and academic skills. The team earned an invitation to compete in the seven-state, North Central Region competition in Salina Kansas, coming up in May by performing as one of the top two teams in North Dakota in additional competition areas, including problem solving, public speaking, and military drill.

“Congratulations, bright futures ahead for these young men and women!” exclaimed Capt. David West, one of the volunteers who helped oversee the cadet’s serving at the Dakota Boys and Girls Thrift Store. Parents, adult CAP members, and six of the squadron’s cadets volunteered several weekends with special help from the Minot Air Force Base Honor Guard to prepare for the competition weekend. Cadets and volunteers from around the state were treated to a military-style ball, following the competition.

Local Civil Air Patrol members have planned to host an Open House for the public next week, March 25 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Avflight, 2400 N. Broadway. Community members interested in learning more about CAP can hear from active members and see some of the current emergency response gear. Aircraft tours will be available conditions permitting. Adults interested in emergency response, aerial photography, and other volunteer areas can start or pick up applications. Potential cadets, aged 12 – 18 can ask how CAP can start teens in aviation, teach leadership, and provide emergency response in the community.
