I had no intention of getting lunch when I walked into the BX around noon last Wednesday. Truth is I simply needed to wash my hands. That when you tend to find great things, when you not really looking! That’s how I found my beautiful wife 47 years ago, but that’s a story for another time.

After washing my hands I noticed a couple folks I knew sitting at table so I wandered over to say hello. One suggested I try the Gyro’s at the Anatolia Grill, so I headed over and placed an order for one lamb Gyro with extra Tzatziki to go. I received great service from a very pleasant young woman, and was on my way back to town in no time with my prize.
Upon arrival, I told my wife Margie I had a surprise for her. Although she’s not much of a lunch eater she was excited to hear that I had a lamb Gyro. Being from Long Island, NY she had grown up with access to a tremendous variety of ethnic foods. She was as thrilled as I was to see how this Gyro would stack up. I only bought one so I let her have the first few bites, her response was “Oh yes! now that’s a good Gyro”.
It wasn’t quite a When Harry met Sally kind of “Oh Yessss”, but it was sincere. Now it was my turn, plenty of that flavorful meat in every bite right down to the last. Fresh lettuce, red onion, and just the right amount of tomato, the pita was likely store bought but nice and fresh and held together nicely, these were all the right ingredients for a great Gyro in just the right proportions, but the star of the show was the Tzatziki sauce, it was unique, a bit strong at first bite but a flavor that actually got better with each subsequent bite.
I believe it was perhaps the best Gyro I’ve had. Never having been to the Mediterranean, I may not the best judge, but I do recommend you giving the Anatolia Grill a try. I’ll certainly be back again. Cheers!
