Golf is one of those sports that looks easy, until you actually try it. For non-golfers, the game can seem a little intimidating. Between the dress code, equipment, rules, and scoring, there can be a lot of uncertainty. Luckily for those who live on or near Minot Air Force Base, there is an affordable and approachable way to give the sport a try right here in our own backyard. Is it worth a shot? You decide.
One of the great things about the Rough Rider Golf Course is that you don’t even have to come through the base gate to access it. The course is open to both the public and the base community, making it a convenient option for anyone looking to spend a day on the greens.
The course website describes Rough Rider Golf Course as:
“The Rough Rider Golf Course is a challenging nine-hole course located near Minot Air Force Base and can be entered directly from U.S. Highway 83… The course is an essential part of the entertainment and recreation program at Minot Air Force Base and is managed and maintained in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Amenities include a driving range, putting green, chipping green, and picnic area.”
The golf course operates during the summer months while the base bowling alley is closed for the season. Once fall arrives, operations shift back to bowling. Until then, the golf course is open (weather permitting):
Monday–Friday: 9 a.m. to dusk
Saturday–Sunday: 8 a.m. to dusk
The course also offers memberships, discounted rates for members, a driving range, and additional amenities. More information can be found on their website.
That’s the official information, but what do people who have recently played there think? Here’s what a few local golfers had to say:

“My husband is a member and got a membership last year. I think the only con is that they raised the prices this year. Other than that, it’s honestly a great little golf course. We take the whole family, and my daughter loves to tag along.”
— Jor’den Linzi Chance
“Great local course! Played here four times this season and always had a blast. It’s fun, a bit challenging, and the fairways and greens are well taken care of. There’s a little bit of fairway damage in spots, but nothing that gets in the way of a good game. The staff is always incredibly kind and professional. Definitely worth checking out.”
— Eric Sanders
“Likes: close to base, can be challenging, employees are nice, and the cost is less than other courses. Dislikes: not a true 18-hole course, they took discount days away, there are dakrat holes in places, puddles on the fairway even when it hasn’t rained, the cart paths are beat up, and there’s a trail fee even if you own your own golf cart. Overall, we don’t mind golfing there because it’s convenient.”
— Pandy Watrous
Whether you’re an experienced golfer or someone who’s never picked up a club before, Rough Rider Golf Course offers a convenient and affordable way to get outside and enjoy a North Dakota summer.
What do you think of the golf course and other amenities on base? Will you give them a try this summer? We’d love to hear your thoughts, or see your photos submitted to our Sensational Summer Photo Contest!
